Let me start off with a short story
So i decided to buy Rainbow six lockdown, as well as ghost recon advance warfighter, they were 20$ each (this was over a year ago, closer to 2 years ago i think as i WAS a big fan of clancy games (namely, rogue spear and raven shield) so i go through the nightmare of installing lockdown, and have to put in this wierd cd key ive never seen before. Not only was the font impossible for me to distinguish on the cd key (i googled it, its the same for everybody with the same game) and finally got it in
played this game a bit, pretty fun, worth 20$. its fun, i hate how clancy games have changed from tactics to big tuff many guy shootemup games. After a few weeks, my dvd writer fails. Completely dead, i test it in other computers and notihng. I try to figure out why it failed and i remember that while other games wouldnt work in it, lockdown did. After doing some research on the internet i hear about a lot of other people having similar issues. I learn that STARFORCE (incarnation of satan himself) is most likely the reason why my dvd drive died.
so, what have we learned? That actually paying for the games ends up screwing you over.
i also had issues with oblivion shivvering isles, (or whatever its name is) i bought the disk, but it didnt trust that my dvd drives were real (thought it was a dvd emulator or something i guess) and i had to hook an ide to usb caple to install it from a cd drive in my other computer. Ive heard of no such issues with the pirated copies of this game
dont get me wrong, you should NOT pirate games, its dangerous and your internet provider can get pissed, especially if you are with cox, they have become more radical in the recent months.
What i am saying though, is that pirating the game gives the user a better experience then those of us who pay the 50$ for the game.
When the free copy is less trouble then the copy you pay for, and with no logistical way of stopping piracy, this will inevitably kill the massive gaming markets.
Introversian seems to be the only company nowadays with any brains (valve is alright as well i suppose) introversian gives out demos of the game that are essentially the full game with a few limitations. They feel that they can USE piracy to get interest in a game. a test drive if you will. i played the defcon demo a bit, decided i loved the game, but wanted to be able to play in onlinegames without worrying about having too many demo players. after some convincing, i also bought darwinia (which i had played before purchasing and didnt enjoy too much but now im a satisfied owner of that game).
Valve is also a good company with piracy, allthough they have a questionable track record at times, with the occasional attack of the illegitament copies of hl2 thing they get every now and than. They make is so me (the consumer) has the ability to install any of my games bought from them, on any computer, anywhere, without any disks at all. Only 3rd party games (like bioshock) can get out of this. I will pay 50$ for a game (assuming its not crap) just for that feature. Tactics like this, are the last few hopes for the gaming community.
EA is the giant fearful monolith of gaming, and their downfall is coming very soon. Spore is the beginning of the end for them, and sims 3 will most likely follow. I dont want to outline the DRM in Spore, but lets just say, its bad, if you want to see what its done, well go to amazon (http://www.amazon.com/review/product/B000FKBCX4/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?_encoding=UTF8&showViewpoints=1).
Although i do not believe in rating a product i have never used, and indeed, i have never played spore, but i will say that i will never buy spore unless the drm is removed. This drm ONLY limits the people who buy the game. This game was cracked and distributed, drm free, over the internet before it was even released. So the people who pirated it pirated it. I had no intentions of pirating it, nor did i, nor will i, but i did intend on buying it, and i did plan on spending 50$ on it. i had the 50$ all saved up, ready to buy it. I wasnt to obsessed about it but i was definately excited, then i learned about the drm. 3 installs? Essentially renting the game? and RISKING DESTROYING MY ALREADY DIEING COMPUTER?!?!?! no way! i will not pay EA for this garbage. now im glad i didnt buy it. Not only have i heard that its been dumbed down for everybody and their grandma to beat it, but i saved 50$! i was also looking forward to the sims 3, ive always had a wierd attraction to the sims. but, same ol EA. Im willing to bet one blueberrie muffin that the drm will be as bad or worse than spores. and, i will not buy it.
by the way EA, same thing goes for Red Alert 3, a game ive been waiting for forrreeevverrrr, if theres DRM, i will nto buy it. ill just play sins of a solar empire and left for dead instead.
Sorry EA, but i hope your business either reforms your tactics, or goes bankrupt.
ahh, much better, its always nice to rant a bit
