My opinion of this book has changed a little. I think it ends a little stronger then it started but i feel it was a really boring read for me. I found, that my interview with francis was 10,000 times more powerful then this whole book, and it made me question my opinions on darfur. I think this book really doesn't hit home so well. The book was great for background knowledge on past civil wars and the action taken on it (or lack thereof) but when it comes to the current situation it really fails to satisfy my demands. I find that i am hard to convince fully, or even partially when ive already questioned something, and this book failed to move me at all. My interview with Francis was one of the most powerful experiences I've ever had. That 7 minutes really connected with me profoundly and although I still believe there are many political and economic problems with helping darfur, that it should definitely be on the agenda.
"dont be to complex! we often overload our message by telling everything of interest about our subject in all its glorious complexity. pick the highlights. make a few simple points!" - pg 164 and 251
yet another quote I don't really like. Although propaganda wise its 100% true, thats what makes me so against it, ESPECIALLY with a situation like Darfur, where there are so many complex issues that have no easy answers. I believe it doesn't do the issue justice to look at is at a single nation with a problem easily solved by the international community. it also portrays those in opposition to helping Darfur look evil and cold hearted and thats not true. Maybe i just believe in showing both sides to much. I'm honestly still struggling to gain an opinion and i think the only way for me to gain an opinion currently is to learn about Chinese and Russian foreign policy as well as Sudanese military capabilities and China and Russia's ability to fund, support, and aid them. I don't think i know enough specifics to form a genuine opinion. the book didnt give me a full enough picture of the world in my opinion
